Ils auraient pu vivre et se rencontrer il y a six décennies, quelque part entre un concert des Beatles et le comptoir en zinc d’un pub anglais : After Geography, c’est ce duo composé de deux mômes des 90’s aux allures rétro et dandy foot, pour qui jouer de la musique ensemble relève de l’évidence. Car si Julien Méret et Nicolas Baud se rejoignent, c’est bien sur cette passion fervente du songwriting et de la pop rock british des 60’s aux 90’s. Des influences dont ils infusent leur musique depuis fin 2021, entre la sortie de deux maxi 45 T de 3 titres et une tournée d’une cinquantaine de dates.
Fabriquer des chansons, leur donner une voix et une texture, un corps et une enveloppe : tel est le leitmotiv d’After Geography, pour qui l’écriture tient de l’intuition et de la spontanéité autant que de la nécessité. Dans ses textes, le duo explore avec une autodérision faussement désinvolte les affres d’une génération un peu paumée : si la dépression est le mal du siècle, alors After Geography la transforme en un personnage loufoque ou en redessine les contours dans l’imaginaire et la métaphore. Sur un son sauvage mais jamais criard, des arrangements pop sophistiqués et des rythmes acidulés, le duo joue des harmonies vocales et saupoudre sa musique d’une basse mélodique et d’une guitare toujours subtile.
Mais chercher à définir le style After Geography serait peut-être, dans un sens, ne pas tout à fait le saisir. Britpop ou Glam Rock, un brin folk dans l’intention, parfois punk dans l’énergie : pour After Geography après tout, peu importe le genre, du moment qu’il y a la musique. Et c’est d’ailleurs pour mieux la servir que le duo s’entoure de deux musiciens en live et donne ainsi à ses morceaux une dimension nouvelle, plus brute, plus rock et plus primaire.
Cette pluralité assumée et identitaire, After Geography s’apprête à la confirmer dans un tout nouvel EP, prévu pour l’automne 2023. Caramel Room s’illustre comme un condensé vivant et pluriel de ce qu’est After Geography : entre lignes accrocheuses, sonorités incisives et mélodies solaires, ce disque offre une version plus libre et dépouillée de leur musique. Six titres pensés pour être reçus comme ils ont été conçus : avec une exigeante simplicité et le cœur grand ouvert.

They could have lived and met six decades ago, somewhere between a concert of The Beatles and a zinc counter of an English pub: After Geography is this duo made up of two kids from the 90s with retro and dandy football looks. For them, playing music together is obvious. Because if Julien Méret and Nicolas Baud come together, it is around this fervent passion for songwriting and British pop rock from the 60s to the 90s. They have instilled these influences into their music since 2021, releasing two Maxi Singles and and performing a tour of 50 shows.
Creating songs, giving them a voice and a texture, a body and an envelope: that is the leitmotif of After Geography. Their writing results from intuition and spontaneity as much as necessity. In their texts, they explore the turmoil of a somewhat lost generation with falsely offhanded self-mockery: if depression is considered the disease of the century, After Geography turns it into a wacky character or redraws its outlines in imagination and metaphor. On a wild but never garish sound, on sophisticated pop arrangements, on tart rhythms, the duo plays with vocal harmonies and sprinkles its music with a melodic bass and a subtle guitar.
But trying to define the style of After Geography might lead, in a way, to not quite understand it. Britpop or Glam Rock, a bit folk in its intention, sometimes punk in its energy: for After Geography, it doesn't matter the genre, as long as there is music. And in order to serve it in the best way, the duo surrounds itself with two live musicians (Camille/Drum. Arthur/Guitar) and thus gives its songs a new dimension, more raw, more rock and more primary.
After Geography is about to confirm this claimed and distinctive plurality it in a whole new EP, scheduled for fall 2023. Caramel Room stands out as a lively and Plural summary of what After Geography is: between catchy lines, incisive sounds and solar melodies, this disc offers a more free and stripped version of their music. Six tracks designed to be received as they were intended: with requiring simplicity and a wide open heart.
