Après un premier album solo très remarqué en 2021, 'Communication Problems', Nick Wheeldon, l'anglais parisien de Sheffield, revient avec un second LP "Gift".
Au cours des 10 dernières années, Nick Wheeldon a enregistré près de 20 disques avec d'innombrables groupes (The Jesus Loves Heroin Band, Os Noctàmbulos, The Necessary Separations, 39th & the Nortons, Nick & Alizon, Sex Sux, Nick Drunken Broken Arms & His False Ninga Dylan Cobb, Dômo Kômo etc.), chacun d'entre eux lui offrant une nouvelle occasion d'affiner son son inspiré de Gene Clark et Alex Chilton - un son à la fois majestueux et fragile, délicat et écorché.
Son premier album solo avait été enregistré dans les chambres de ses potes. "Gift" pousse plus loin le processus créatif. L'idée d'une peinture collective où la forme et le format de la chanson ne seraient jamais deux fois les mêmes. Gift a été enregistré entièrement en direct sur un Tascam 388, 8 pistes, lors d'une session de 10 heures, en février 2021 au Studio Claudio. Le groupe, Demon Hosts, n'avait jamais joué ensemble avant cet album et n'a eu que quatre répétitions de trois heures pour apprendre et arranger les chansons. La restriction du temps devenant un atout dans le processus créatif. Les Demon Hosts ont capturé un moment, une photographie acoustique. "Gift" parle de la fragilité de l'amour. Ce qui était autrefois un médicament peut devenir un poison si on le prend pour acquis.
Les Demon Hosts ; Danny Kendrick (Stratocastors) - batterie et chœurs, Marius Atherton (Stratocastors) - basse, Paul Rannaud (Volage) - guitare solo et chœurs et Sébastien Adam (The Bewitched Hands) - piano, orgue, guitare acoustique, guitare solo sur "Saint Marie" et chœurs. Sous l'oreille attentive de Vincent Hivert (producteur et 6ème membre du groupe), les Demon Hosts ajoutent une couleur, une forme, une confiance et une expérience étonnante à ce qui est certainement la meilleure collection de chansons de Nick Wheeldon.
'Gift' et ses chansons folk lo-fi hypersensibles nous donnent la sensation d'entrer dans le monde intérieur de Wheeldon. De la même manière qu'il aime s'entourer de musiciens venus de toute la France, Wheeldon a l'habitude de confier ses disques à de nombreux labels européens indépendants. Pour la troisième fois, Le Pop Club Records est chargé de faire découvrir sa nouvelle musique au monde entier, après la sortie de "Dômo Kômo" Bugs LP en 2020 et "Communication Problems" en 2021. C'est avec grand plaisir que nous collaborons à nouveau avec un musicien qui, à notre humble avis, ne cesse de prouver qu'il est l'un des musiciens français les plus importants de notre époque, tout anglais qu'il soit.

After a highly acclaimed debut solo album in 2021, 'Communication Problems', Nick Wheeldon, the Parisian from Sheffield, returns with a second LP "Gift".
Over the past 10 years, Nick Wheeldon has recorded nearly 20 albums with countless bands (The Jesus Loves Heroin Band, Os Noctàmbulos, The Necessary Separations, 39th & the Nortons, Nick & Alizon, Sex Sux, Nick Drunken Broken Arms & His False Ninga Dylan Cobb, Dômo Kômo etc.), each of them offering him a new opportunity to refine his Gene Clark and Alex Chilton inspired sound - a sound that is both majestic and fragile, delicate and raw.
His first solo album was recorded in his mates' bedrooms. "Gift" takes the creative process a step further. The idea of a collective painting where the form and format of the song would never be the same twice. Gift was recorded entirely live on a Tascam 388, 8-track, in a 10-hour session in February 2021 at Studio Claudio. The band, Demon Hosts, had never played together before this album and had only four three-hour rehearsals to learn and arrange the songs. The time restriction became an asset in the creative process. The Demon Hosts have captured a moment, an acoustic photograph. "Gift" is about the fragility of love. What was once medicine can become poison if taken for granted.
The Demon Hosts; Danny Kendrick (Stratocastors) - drums and backing vocals, Marius Atherton (Stratocastors) - bass, Paul Rannaud (Volage) - lead guitar and backing vocals and Sebastien Adam (The Bewitched Hands) - piano, organ, acoustic guitar, lead guitar on "Saint Marie" and backing vocals. Under the careful ear of Vincent Hivert (producer and 6th member of the band), the Demon Hosts add amazing colour, shape, confidence and experience to what is surely Nick Wheeldon's finest collection of songs.
Gift' and its hypersensitive lo-fi folk songs give us the feeling of entering Wheeldon's inner world. Just as he likes to surround himself with musicians from all over France, Wheeldon has a habit of entrusting his records to numerous independent European labels. For the third time, Le Pop Club Records is responsible for bringing his new music to the world, following the release of "Dômo Kômo" Bugs LP in 2020 and "Communication Problems" in 2021. It is with great pleasure that we collaborate again with a musician who, in our humble opinion, keeps proving to be one of the most important French musicians of our time, English though he is.
